Communities in Schools

Memminger Elementary has an active Communities in Schools (CIS).  The goal of CIS is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.  CIS partners with Trident United Way LINKS to Success to offer these programs.

 

Memminger welcomes volunteers from the community and our partner school the College of Charleston.  If you have an interest in participating any of the following programs either as a volunteer or participant contact Raymond Nelson, Student Support Specialist at rnelson@cischarleston.org or (843) 724-7778

 

Charleston Dorchester Mental Health (CDMH)-Behavioral Health Services

Individual, family and group counseling; strengths-based assessment; crisis intervention and physician’s medical assessments are provided.  Treament models used include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Trauma focused CBT, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Additionally case management supports to maintain insurance eligibility and access to additional community services are provided.  Parent consent for treatment is obtained by CDMH staff.

 

Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB)-Backpack Buddies

A weekend nutrition program that provides a backpack with nutritious snacks to supplement nutrition for children living in homes with food insecurity.  Children are referred to the ISP site coordinator by classroom teachers and/or the CORE team.  Families of referred children are contacted by the school’s Financial Stability Project AmeriCorps member to arrange screening using the Benefit Bank and to offer additional financial stability supports.

 

Tri-county Family Ministries (TFM)-Emergency Assistance

Parents make an emergency assistance request through the ISP site coordinator who works with the parent and the FSP AmeriCorp member to complete a needs assessment, Benefit Bank screening, Charity Tracker screening and referral to TFM emergency assistance.

 

AmeriCorps Financial Stability Project (FSP)

AmeriCorps members work collaboratively with Site Coordinators and school personnel to serve as Family Navigators, with a focus on engaging parents by providing resources they need to mitigate financial or family crisis and become financially stable.

 

Charleston Co. School District (CCSD)-Adult Education (GED, ESL, & WorkKeys)

CCSD Adult Education offers parents/adult caregivers of children receiving LINKS services programs to enhance their basic education; prepare for the GED exam; obtain knowledge and skills for employment (WorkKeys) and/or improve their English Language skills (ESL)

 

Charleston Volunteeers for Literacy Book Buddies

Book buddies is an intensive literary support program that focuses on promoting grade level reading proficiency through individual instruction prepared and overseen by a certified reading teacher and delivered in his/her presence by trained volunteers.

 

Communities In Schools (CIS) Reading Soul Mates (RSM)

Reading Soul Mates is a reading intervention for 1st grade students promoting master of site words as well as a learning strategy for 5th grade students who pair up with a younger child to assist them.

 

WINGS for Kids, Inc.-WINGS After School Program

WINGS delivers a social and emotional educational program to elementary school children n the after school setting running 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, 35 weeks per year.

 

Junior Achievement (JA)-Financial Literacy and Work Readiness

Junior Achievement provides applied learning presentations in three core business areas: Education, Youth Development, and Economic Development.  Programs are correlated to the SC Teaching Standards for Social Studies, Language Arts, and Mathematics for grades K-8. 

 

The Healing Species (THS) -Compassion Education and Violence Prevention Availability The Healing Species provides an 11 week compassion education and violence prevention program for 4th grade students during once weekly classroom sessions. 

 

Project Playground- The mission of Project Playground is to offer the children of Memminger Elementary the opportunity to engage in fun, structured play. Students from the College of Charleston engage the students in play that is tailored to teach appropriate social skills and teamwork.
